Art Association demonstration, workshop

The Fallbrook Art Association’s January general meeting will feature Laguna Beach’s award-winning plein air oil painter, Ken Auster, at 1 p.m. January 13 at the Hilltop Center, 331 East Elder. Preceding the meeting, there will be an informal “Eat ’n Critique” session from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Participants in the critique are encouraged to bring one or two “paintings in progress” plus a snack or box lunch to eat during the session. Refreshments will be served following the meeting. The meeting and critique session are open to the public at no charge. Membership applications are available at all meetings. For more information about membership, please contact Shirley Williams at (760) 451-8664.

While working his way toward a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree from Long Beach State University, Auster built one of the world’s most prominent silkscreen and t-shirt companies, creating now-legendary surfing art that adorned surfers from Belmont Shores to Hawaii to Mexico. His surfing images, silk-screened as original prints on paper, became the “fine art” of this beach culture and today represent the classic surf art of the past century.

Auster’s passion for painting is shared with hundreds of students who come from around the world each year to attend his workshops in Laguna Beach and Carmel.

In addition to demonstrating at the meeting, Auster will hold a workshop from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. January 14 at the Art Campus at Fallbrook’s School of Art, 310 East Alvarado. For the cost of the workshop or for more information, please contact Marlene Sheridan at [email protected] or [email protected].
