Hasvold named boys Most Valuable at cross-country banquet

It was no surprise that Bret Hasvold received the boys varsity Most Valuable award at the Fallbrook High School cross-country banquet November 29 at the Bob Burton Performing Arts Center.

Hasvold, a junior, was the Warriors’ top runner throughout the season, which he concluded by winning the Avocado League meet, finishing third at the CIF meet, and placing 21st at the state meet. The Warriors finished second in the league, third in the CIF finals, and 11th at the state meet.

Senior Vinny Granata earned the Most Inspirational award for the boys varsity while junior Sam Liner earned the varsity’s Most Improved award.

Four varsity runners split the Coaches’ Award: senior Tim Eves and juniors Josh Smith, Kevin Strickfaden, and Todd Van Duzer.

The junior varsity’s Most Valuable award went to Uriel Aguirre, a sophomore who ran junior varsity races during the season but also participated in varsity competition. Blake Brady won the Most Improved award for the junior varsity.

The only award for the freshman squad was Most Valuable, which went to Richard Wojan.

The banquet also saw the presentation of 14 letters to boys runners while 12 boys received Union-Tribune scholar-athlete awards.

Freshman Jordan Rowley showed one of his other skills at the banquet by playing the bagpipes to start the celebration with “Scotland the Brave.” A 15-minute, 587-slide presentation covering both the boys and the girls squads was also part of the banquet which featured both the boys and girls Warrior cross-country teams.

“We had a wonderful time,” said boys head coach Marty Hauck. “It’s always a very, very nice evening.”
