Plays that salute Chicano history offered

FALLBROOK — William Virchis, a renowned professional stage director at the San Diego Rep, The Old Globe and many other theaters in San Diego and LA, will come to the Bob Burton Center of the Performing Arts at Fallbrook High School on February 9. For students, he will offer three performance/workshops on three plays by Luis Valdez. That same evening, at 7 p.m., an additional show will be offered for the community. The plays are entertaining and inspiring with meaningful messages for all ages.

This is made possible through an effort of FHS Drama instructor Florene Villane, who approached Principal Rod King, who was very supportive of bringing Latino theater not only to the students but to the whole Fallbrook community. A task force was immediately formed within weeks between King, Steve Kettering (WASC director), Travis Benintendo (vice principal), Chad Costanzo (Arts Center director) and Villane to begin the framework. Virchis, director of Teatro Mascara Magico, met with the Fallbrook task force late last September to further enhance the project.

Since all performances are designed to enhance student learning and achievement, Benintendo submitted the project for block grants. Thanks to the block grants, admission is “gratis.”

Performances for the students will be held February 9 at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The evening performance for the community is 7 p.m. Enjoy Chicano history, family, folklore and more!
