Welsh to speak to Garden Club January 30

FALLBROOK — The Fallbrook Garden Club is delighted to have Emmy Award-winning author, TV personality and artist Pat Welsh speak on the topic “How to Design and Build a Multimedia Mural” at their Tuesday, January 30, general meeting at 12:30 p.m., Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane. A lifelong painter, Welsh graduated from Scripps College, where she studied painting with Millard Sheets, Jean Ames and William McFee; ceramics with Paul Pederson; and sculpture with Albert Stewart.

Most club members know Welsh as the author of “Pat Welsh’s Southern California Gardening: A Month-by-Month Guide,” often called “the gardener’s bible.” During more than 30 years as a garden communicator, Welsh has been a garden editor, columnist, TV host, author and the winner of many awards. But she is also an artist, and with graphic artist and muralist Betsy Schulz and 80 volunteers, she designed and built the 92-foot-long Del Mar Library Multimedia Mural. Welsh has written a book about the experience, called “The Magic Mural and How it Got Built: A Fable for Children of All Ages.”

In her slide illustrated talk, Welsh will describe the whole process of mixed-media mural construction from concept to completion and show how such designs can be a practical and beautiful part of a garden setting. There will also be a detailed handout. This talk has been well received at the San Diego Mater Gardener Seminar and also in Orange County at the Southern California Flower and Garden Show because it includes some inspiring thoughts about living and having fun in the garden. Many people have a bare wall in their garden and this talk describes a way to cover it with a work of art.

Garden Club meetings are always open to the public. Fallbrook Garden Club is a member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., Pacific Region and California Garden Clubs, Inc., Palomar District. For further information, contact BJ Russell at (760) 728-8081 or Yolande Jackson at (760) 728-0301.
