Village Rotary thanked by Marines

FALLBROOK — At a recent meeting of Fallbrook Village Rotary, a program was presented by Lt. Col. Randy Lawson, Major Steve Svendsen and Lt. Jim Peugh (chaplain), the commanding officers of the Marine Combined Logistics Battalion 5, which recently returned from deployment in Iraq. Village Rotary “adopted” this battalion while it was deployed in Iraq, sending 28 boxes of materials not supplied by the military to the men and women of the battalion.

The battalion was composed of engineers, bulk fuel, demolition, maintenance, administration, hospital, helicopter detachment, military police, mortician section, post exchange, post office and financial disbursement section. Their main function was to support and transport supplies to the troops at the front lines in the Falluja area. While performing their mission, one of their men was killed and 16 were wounded.

Because of the efforts of Village Rotary to help this battalion, Lt. Col. Lawson presented the club with an American flag that had flown over the maintenance section at Camp Falluja, a “proclamation” thanking the club for its efforts and a number of “thank you” letters from the recipients of the boxes.
