Madonna Wilson has owned her floral shop, Abigail’s Flower Company, for three years. She previously worked in banking but decided it was time for something new. “It is a lot more fun – you get to make people happy – flowers cheer them up,” Wilson commented. “I am in the people business and I enjoy making people happy.”
Besides the people aspect of the business, she also enjoys working with the flowers because “flowers are always so colorful and it is relaxing, even when it is busy.”
She also enjoys being her own boss. “I am working for myself now and even if I am up at five o’clock in the morning to go to [the] flower market, it’s ok.”
She hasn’t turned down any job because it was too difficult. “We do just about anything,” she said. The shop can handle large sprays and arrangements for weddings. They will also decorate a home for special occasions such as parties or Christmas.
Wilson buys the majority of her flowers at the flower market in Carlsbad but buys her protea from a farm in Fallbrook. The protea is her favorite flower “because they are so different, and last so long.” Wilson’s most requested flower is the rose. “It is a great ‘get me out of trouble’ flower,” she said with a smile.
At Abigail’s Flowers shoppers can buy gifts to go along with their flowers. Wilson offers teddy bears, baby shower items and equestrian-themed gifts. She also stocks a wide selection of cards. Patrons may thumb through a thick book of wedding bouquets and decorations. Just in time for Valentine’s Day Wilson has stocked a number of mugs for arrangements in addition to other Valentine’s Day themed gifts.
Madonna Wilson is a member of the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce and the Fallbrook Rotary.
