John Nord Lynn

Long time resident and community activist, John Nord Lynn passed away on January 20, 2007 in Santa Barbara, California where he had recently moved. John and his wife Olga, who predeceased him in January of 2004, moved to Fallbrook in 1975 and soon became involved in numerous community groups and volunteer activities. Together they helped found the Fallbrook Music Society, volunteered at the Bottom Shelf, and were active in the Fallbrook Historical Society. John was a Mason and a member of the Fallbrook Rotary. He was the past president of the Fallbrook Hospital Association which focused on community health needs and purchased needed equipment for the then independent Fallbrook Hospital. And he enjoyed membership in the Photography and MAC clubs.

Born on October 31, 1913 in Berwyn, Illinois, John came into the world with a curious and inventive mind which was creatively solving problems until shortly before his death. He had several patents to his name including several related to his field, Metallurgical Engineering, as well as for a Golf Club that increased driving distance. At the time of his death he was developing a new approach to teaching Braille, a skill he acquired when his vision declined. For the last four years he was both a student and a teacher at the Vista Center for the Blind.

A proud man, he will be remembered by his children (son John and his wife Eleanor, daughter Marie and her husband, AJ) and his grandchildren (John, Elizabeth and husband Tre, Jennifer and husband John, and Eric) as a man of honesty and high personal integrity whose daily goal was to do or say something kind to those around him.

The family wishes to thank all of those who supported and comforted Dad in his last years and days. The residents and staff of Silvergate Retirement Residence were all so kind. Tablemates Bill, Spencer and Jeanne (“Sunshine”) made mealtime a pleasure. Dorothy Pratt, nurse Jeanne and Sharon made it possible for dad to be independent until his last days. Ginny and Sharon at the Vista Center for the Blind gave Dad encouragement and made him feel valued. And finally, the staff at Valle Verde Skilled Nursing Facility in Santa Barbara provided compassionate care that ensured Dad’s last days were dignified.

At his request, his ashes will join his wife’s at sea. There will be no service.
