Pirates shipwrecked by Lady Warriors

Last Friday, the varsity girl’s basketball team defeated Oceanside by the score of 49-24. The Warriors (18-5) (6-0 in league) are searching for the Avocado league title. The game, despite a rough start, was full of fast breaks, and physical play.

The starters for the game were Kaitlyn Gangnath, Tiffany Hunter, Brooke Harlin, Natalie Zepeda and Marshai Iverson. The game began rough with many fouls called and little points scored. However, Kaitlyn Gangnath hit a three pointer to spark the Warriors. The second quarter was a bit calmer as the Lady Warrior players got in a rhythm and started to hit shots. The score at half was 23-10.

The second half began with lots of fire. Overall, the game had a faster pace and many more turnovers. The Warriors still outplayed the young Pirate team and kept the game out of their reach. The fourth quarter was a building experience as all Warrior players got play time and displayed their talent. The final score was 49-24.

Overall, the Warriors played a decent game, but the Pirates did improve their play compared to the last meeting. Even Coach Whitacre agreed as he said, “We had a much easier time last game versus Oceanside as they played tougher defense this time. “

Some of the standouts of the game were:

Kaitlyn Gangnath: 7 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals

Marshai Iverson: 9 points, 7 rebounds

Tiffany Hunter: 18 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals

Brooke Harlin: 4 points, 4 steals and 4 rebounds

The Warriors are on the way to the title, but need your support. The next home game is Friday, February 9th at 5:15 p.m. Come cheer on the Lady warriors!
