Car Club honors Glen Patterson

FALLBROOK — The Fallbrook Vintage Car Club’s Rover Award is a special honor established by former members Fritz and Diane Rechberger. Both were dedicated workers for the club, she as treasurer and he in many other ways. A retired chef from cruise ships and many-starred eateries, one of Fritz’s memorable positions was as the chief cook at club parties.

Before moving to Arkansas to be near Diane’s family, the couple set up the award to recognize a member who has given outstanding service to the club during the year. The elected and appointed board members vote for the recipient and it cannot be a fellow board member. Each year, the winner has been greatly surprised, as the decision is secret from the general membership until the presentation is made. The wood and brass nameplate trophy is topped by a model of a British Rover just like the prized sedan owned by the Rechbergers – thus, the Rover Award.

The trophy is engraved with the name of each recipient and displayed in the Car Club’s trophy case in the Fallbrook Historical Society Museum next to the annual car show poster display. Previous awardees were Connie Ragland in 2004, Louise Patterson in 2005 and Cecelia Njust in 2006. The most recent winner, for 2007, is Glen Patterson.

Glen has served the club in many capacities, particularly with registration of more than 300 entries for the annual car shows for many years. Glen and wife Louise take part in all the club tours and other activities. Most recently Glen was on kitchen duty during the recent annual brunch, and after helping with cleanup he and Louise joined fellow club members for a back-roads caravan to Temecula. The car they drove that day is a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible, more pristine than when it was new and always a head-turner.
