Free 'smart' controllers for sprinklers available

Customers of the Fallbrook Public Utility District may be eligible to receive a free “smart” controller for their landscape sprinkler systems through a unique program created to introduce the latest in water-savings technology.

Customers who are ready to exchange their old controller for a free state-of-the-art model must call (760) 728-1125, ext. 1127 to reserve their place. The controller swap will take place February 24 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Vista Irrigation District, 1391 Engineer Street. Participants will benefit from a free hands-on training session that teaches them how to install and program their smart controller. Participation in the training session is required.

Only 15 controllers will be distributed to FPUD customers who register ahead of time. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents must have a reservation and a copy of their water bill, must have at least 2,000 square feet of irrigated landscape and must turn in their old controller at the event.

The smart controller giveaway is sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, FPUD and the Vista Irrigation District, with grant funding from Proposition 13 through the California Department of Water Resources.

“Smart controllers take the guesswork out of figuring out a schedule for watering your lawn,” said FPUD General Manager Keith Lewinger. “These state-of-the-art devices monitor your garden or landscape’s environmental conditions and water the plants accordingly. One study showed water savings of up to 40 gallons per household per day, or about 10 percent of total water use.”

The smart controller swap is part of a regional effort to heighten awareness of smart controllers and other new water-saving devices now being rebated by Metropolitan and its member agencies. For more information, log on to http://www.bewaterwise.com/knowledge01.html.
