'Translucent Visions' on display at Escondido museum

Curated by D. Scott Atkinson and organized by the California Center for the Arts’ Escondido museum, “Translucent Visions” is the first exhibition to examine, through a selection of more than 130 watercolors, the variety of subjects Frederic Whitaker and Eileen Monaghan Whitaker explored over the years. Featured are landscapes and cityscapes, animal studies, figurative genre, fruit and floral still-lifes and, of course, the inspired imagery of Mexico.

The work of both Frederic and Eileen demonstrates, through the fluid, translucency of watercolor, their ability to successfully capture the essential spirit of their subjects. In addition, “Translucent Visions” emphasizes their application of pleasing color, bold illustration and keen observation. For Frederic and Eileen, watercolor nurtured the union of their creative passion and fostered in each a unique personal vision.

The Whitakers’ body of work is evidence that these artists enjoyed an unconstrained pursuit of adventure and through their work they have left behind a visual record of their life and travels.
