Roberto Guillen, Melissa Morrison and Elizabeth Peterson of Fallbrook High School and Kristen Richardson of Oasis High School were lauded as outstanding students at the Fallbrook Community Student of the Month breakfast held March 1 at Fallbrook Golf Club’s Hukilau Restaurant.
“This is a ‘wow’ kind of thing we do here,” said emcee Sue Johnson. “This is a great day for us.” Now celebrating its 11th year, the Fallbrook Community Student of the Month program has honored 335 exemplary high school students.
Roberto Guillen was selected for the Student of the Month honor as a result of a nomination by Fallbrook High teachers Adam Dawson and Paula Kuhn.
“Roberto is a fabulous young man,” Dawson said. “We are so proud to have him as a student.”
“Roberto brings a lot of warmth and energy to class,” Kuhn added. Guillen was described as “an inspiration,” extremely diligent, caring, compassionate and a true leader. His teachers said Guillen’s positive attitude makes him a role model for others and he is especially helpful in welcoming new students to the school. Guillen was also recognized for always striving to better himself.
“I want to thank you all very much,” Guillen said. “You make me feel very happy.”
Melissa Morrison was honored as a Student of the Month based on the recommendation of Fallbrook High agriculture department teacher Doug Sehnert.
“Melissa is one of those individuals always willing to pitch in and lend a hand when needed,” said Sehnert, adding that Morrison has a special interest in breeding market sheep and swine.
Morrison has a long history of involvement with Fallbrook FFA and 4H. She currently services as secretary for the FFA organization and was recognized for the high level of integrity she possesses. In the past, she has participated in field hockey and lacrosse at Fallbrook High School.
Elizabeth Peterson was recommended for the Student of the Month honor by Fallbrook High teacher Dorothy Hartford.
“This young lady is amazing,” Hartford said. “She is humble, quiet and works incredibly hard to see that things get done.”
Peterson’s studies include all honors and advanced placement classes. She serves as president of the Fallbrook High French Club as well as the Film Club. She is a member of the Model United Nations and has earned the distinction of being on the FHS A-Team and on the All Academic Team.
In addition, Peterson is a Ticktocker with the National Charity League’s San Luis Rey Chapter and has served a large number of hours each year to the many philanthropic causes affiliated with that organization. She has also volunteered her time to several Habitat for Humanity projects.
“We work so hard and sometimes I think we don’t know why,” Peterson said. “It is so nice to be recognized.”
Kristen Richardson was named Student of the Month based on a nomination from Oasis High School teacher Dave Major.
“It was apparent very early on that Kristen was going to be a future Student of the Month recipient,” Major said. “She is an outstanding student and an exemplary young lady. Her career goal is to be an architect.”
Richardson, described as a “shining star” at school, carries a 3.76 grade point average and is described as a very analytical thinker. She volunteers her time to REINS Therapeutic Horsemanship Program and attends MiraCosta College part-time, where she has a 4.0 grade point average. She is interested in graphic design and enjoys scuba diving.
“I chose to go to Oasis because I want to graduate early,” Richardson said. “I want to continue at MiraCosta and go on to pursue a career as an architect.”
Friends, family and members of the business and service communities, as well as representatives of elected officials, attended the prestigious event and provided certificates of achievement and gifts to the students honored.
