Bottle caps as art? - Exhibit takes third place

FALLBROOK — The Art Center at Fallbrook’s Inaugural Open Juried Show, judged by D. Scott Atkinson, curator at the San Diego Museum of Art, provides an interesting sampling in a wide variety of media including sculpture, basketry, paintings of various subjects and a large mosaic entitled “Neo,” made from thousands of bottle caps installed by John Reth of Escondido. The installation took 21 hours. Reth, a first-time exhibitor at the center, took third place for this work.

A graduate of San Diego State University with a BA in art and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Reth has been doing large, colorful installations of objects normally considered trash since his college years. He finds the bright colors and regular shapes intriguing. People have been said to pass by Reth’s outdoor installations on their way to work and watch.

Second place went to Peggy Wiedemann, a North County-based fiber artist, for her woven sculpture “Canyons;” first place was awarded to Fallbrook-based William “Ironhand” Swick for his large-scale graphite pencil work “Cory.”

The show draws its inspiration from the Fallbrook Art Association, which has presented open juried shows at the center for the past 12 years. The Art Association also sponsored the exhibition.

“All’s Fair in Art” is open daily through March 25, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. Admission is $5 for non-members. Art Center members are free. The Art Center is located at 103 South Main Avenue in Fallbrook. For more information, call (760) 728-1414 or visit http://www.fallbrookart.org.
