Celebrated tubist to perform in Fallbrook

FALLBROOK — Fallbrook Music Society will proudly present the solo debut of Chicago Symphony Orchestra principal tubist Gene Pokorny on Sunday, March 18, at 3 p.m. in the Bob Burton Center for the Performing Arts, Fallbrook. Conductor Jon Robertson will lead the Redlands Symphony Orchestra in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra,” one of Williams’ most popular works and an essential part of the tuba repertoire.

A proud native of Southern California, Pokorny graduated from the University of Southern California. He has also played in the Israel Philharmonic, the Utah Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

While in Los Angeles Pokorny played in several movie soundtracks, including “Jurassic Park” and “The Fugitive.” Last May, Pokorny received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music.

In addition, Berlioz’s Harold in Italy, with viola soloist Kira Blumberg, will also be on the program. It features an innovative, extensive part for solo viola – a dusky, evocative instrument in a dramatic role of a melancholy personality. Blumberg is principal viola of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. She is very active in the recording industry, working on many movies including “A Beautiful Mind,” “Panic Room” and “Troy.”

At 2:30 p.m., a half-hour before this unique symphony performance, the conductor will give a preview of the upcoming concert. Concert tickets can be purchased by calling (760) 451-8644 or visiting http://www.fallbrookmusicsociety.org. The Bob Burton Center for the Performing Arts is on the Fallbrook High School campus at 2400 South Stage Coach Lane.
