Community Read events planned

FALLBROOK — The fourth annual Community Read sponsored by Friends of the Fallbrook Library will begin April 1 at the Art & The Book festival in downtown Fallbrook. The Community Read selection for 2007 is “My Life in France” by Julia Child and Alex Prud’homme. The culmination of the Community Read will be the Friends annual luncheon April 27 at Pala Mesa Resort. Prud’homme, Julia Child’s great-nephew, will be the special guest speaker.

In keeping with the theme of this year’s selection, “Pleasures of the Table,” an exhibition of French memorabilia, art and accessories, will be in the main gallery of the Art Center April 1-6. It will include a display of French-themed quilts created by local artisans and during the month of April the Art Center’s main window will feature a version of Julia Child’s famous TV kitchen.

On Wednesday, April 4, “Good Taste,” a wine tasting featuring a selection of the California wines Child favored, will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Art Center. An admission fee will be charged at the door.

On Thursday, April 12, “My Life in France” will be the subject of Book Talk, the monthly book discussion group. In addition to the regularly scheduled discussion held at 1 p.m. at the Fallbrook Public Utility District meeting room, a second Book Talk will be held at 5 p.m. at the Art Center. Light refreshments will be served at the evening event. Copies of “My Life in France” may be obtained through the library or purchased at the Book Nook, 129 East Hawthorne, or Major Market.

The Friends annual luncheon will include a silent auction of selected books and an opportunity drawing. Reservations are required and the deadline is April 17. Reservations will also be taken at the Art & The Book festival. Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit Fallbrook’s new library building fund.
