Come spend a week in my neighborhood

Ms. Wright and Develle, I ask you to spend a week in my neighborhood.

I live within spitting distance of Camp Pendleton. The Marines set up their practice artillery encampment less than two miles away. Let me address some of your concerns.

First, they don’t bomb all night. They stop between 10 and 11 p.m. (at the latest, usually earlier) and don’t start until after 6 a.m., often later. This is also usually confined to a week or two every couple of months. I haven’t noticed any detrimental effects to my family or my horses, though a couple of the dogs don’t seem to like it much, but then, they don’t like thunder either. And if the bombs don’t shake the timbers at my house, I doubt they shake yours.

The choppers are not constant; believe me, I should know. They fly maneuvers directly in front of my property and one of their flight patterns in and out of the base goes directly over my house. There are many days when they don’t fly at all.

Additionally, they do also train over the ocean, but if you haven’t noticed, not much fighting has been going on over the water these days. It’s probably better if they practice on land.

The fires that start on the base during Santa Ana winds burn toward the west (the ocean is that way), so they pose little threat to populated areas. Check your scanner sometime, in case you don’t think this is true.

And last, Pendleton was there long before you or I bought our houses. If you don’t like the disruption, why did you buy there? The Marines and Pendleton are a fact of life in this community. If you don’t like it, the “reasonable solution” is probably to move to a quieter place, because the Marines aren’t going anywhere soon.
