High school gymnastics teams achieve goal

Fallbrook High School’s varsity and junior varsity gymnastics teams hosted the first meet of the 2007 season on Tuesday, March 13. The Lady Warriors competed against Westview High School, while Poway High School competed against La Costa Canyon.

“This is the first time in five years that we have actually held an event at our school,” said Coach Debbie Mericle. “In the past, we have hosted the event at surrounding high schools, so we are really excited.”

Last year, the varsity and junior varsity teams, consisting of eight to nine members, strived to raise money for new floor mats. Because of the support from the community and the determination of the team, they not only were able to purchase seven new mats but were also able to purchase other needed training equipment.

“We would like to thank all our supporters and parents. That includes the Fallbrook Vintage Car Club and the Angel Society,” said Debbie. “Because of you, we achieved our goal, which enables us to host future gymnastic events.”

Debbie Mericle and her assistant, Allison Abbott, are proud their teams have not only worked hard to accomplish their goal but have grown to a total of 21 members. The varsity team consists of 12 members and the junior varsity team has nine.

When asked how she felt about her teams’ dedication and spirit, Debbie said, “My girls are the little ants that move the rubber tree plant along.”
