Honorary mayor seeks gifts for local hero

FALLBROOK — Honorary Mayor Rhonda Reinke is asking for the public’s help in making Easter special for a local hero and his wife.

Kyle Layer, a corporal in his early 20s, received near-fatal wounds while fighting in Iraq and lost several of his buddies during that ambush. He is still undergoing surgeries and therapy to improve his condition; meanwhile, he walks with a cane and deals with pain, weakness and much more.

Both Kyle and wife Melonie attended the March 10 Girl Scouts’ Operation Thin Mint event in the Village Square. There they met Reinke, who was moved by the couple’s ordeal.

“This is a proud young couple,” says Reinke. “When I asked what they needed, they hesitated and said they would be okay. ‘Okay’ is not good enough for the sacrifice Kyle has made! Let’s show Kyle and Melonie that their community cares about them and appreciates their sacrifices.”

Gifts for the couple will be delivered Easter weekend before Kyle has to undergo another surgery. Those who would like to include donations are asked to mail or deliver them to the Art Campus office at 310 East Alvarado, Suite B. Suggested gifts include dry goods (non-perishables only, please); monetary donations; gift certificates for restaurants, theaters, movie rentals, clothing, food, car care and the like; or any other donation that might be useful for a very young couple. Reinke also welcomes donors to include personal notes to Kyle and Melonie.
