Grease can artists, schools honored

FALLBROOK — After 500 entries rolled in for the Fallbrook Public Utility District’s (FPUD) annual grease-catcher art contest, the top 14 were selected and the schoolchildren who crafted them were recognized Monday, March 26. In addition, Fallbrook Street School was awarded the district’s $500 prize for the greatest number of entries in the contest. Zion Lutheran School was awarded $300 for the second-greatest number of entries. Students from La Paloma and Live Oak schools also participated.

The prizes are incentives for schools to encourage participation and are to be used to purchase art supplies. The funds were provided by a grant specifically for the program. The cans are currently on display at The Art Campus at Fallbrook.

The artists were presented certificates and prizes for making and decorating cans designed to keep kitchen grease out of the sewer system. The cans could solve the sewer spill problem by remaining on kitchen countertops. Parents would then line the cans with plastic bags, fill them with cooking grease and toss the bags in the trash when full.

Sierra Torres Phillips, a fourth-grader, won first place for creating a can that looks like the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants. Second place was taken by Chase Carpenter, a fourth-grader, and third-place was awarded to Maggie Hollander, a second-grader. All three attend Zion Lutheran School. Other winners included:
