Guac Girls second in indoor league

The Guac Girls finished second in the North County Indoor Field Hockey League post-season tournament.

The team consisting of Fallbrook High School varsity and junior varsity field hockey players won a semifinal match in overtime February 18 before losing in the final later that day.

“I was very pleased. The girls played well,” said Guac Girls coach Kathy Waite.

Since the players cannot officially represent Fallbrook High School outside of the CIF field hockey season, the team cannot call themselves the Warriors and has adopted the name Guac Girls for the National Field Hockey Festival and for indoor league and spring tournament play. Waite is the coach of the high school varsity team as well as the Guac Girls, who are comprised mostly if not entirely of Fallbrook High School varsity and junior varsity field hockey players.

The North County Indoor Field Hockey League plays a winter season at Kit Carson Park in Escondido, which is a covered facility. The indoor league includes seven players on each team, including the goalkeeper, although in overtime that number is reduced to four players for each team.

The Guac Girls finished the league season in second place after losing their final league game to the Wargles, who consist of San Pasqual High School players. The Guac Girls and the Wargles had been tied for first place prior to that final game. Although the Guac Girls were 0-2-1 against the Wargles, including a loss in the championship match, they did not lose to any other team in the league.

The semifinal match saw the Warriors defeat the Flyers, who compete for Scripps Ranch High School during the high school season. In the Guac Girls’ 2-1 win, Emily Badillo scored in regulation with an assist from Devon Holman while Holman scored the winning goal in overtime.

The Wargles scored the first goal in the finals, but the Guac Girls tied the game and the score stood 1-1 at halftime. The Wargles took a 3-1 lead before Fallbrook scored with about eight minutes left. “Had some opportunities. We just didn’t put it in. But I was real pleased with the girls’ play,” Waite said.

Mandie Kelly and Lizzy Eskue scored for the Guac Girls, both from shots off rebounds.

“Roslyn Reynoso did a great job in goal, and that was good to see,” Waite said.

The North County Indoor Field Hockey League does not include seniors. “It’s to introduce and get the new and the incoming sophomores playing with the returnees,” Waite said. “A lot of it’s confidence level, too.”

The players include the past year’s varsity squad members, including juniors as well as sophomores. “Part of it is it’s so necessary for the JV girls coming up to realize the caliber that they’re going to have to adjust to very quickly,” Waite said.
