New battery recycling program available at FPUD

FALLBROOK — Keep Fallbrook Clean and Green (KFCG) inaugurated its new community program for recycling household dry cell batteries on March 26 at the Fallbrook Public Utility District (FPUD) parking lot. Representatives from the three sponsoring groups – KFCG, FPUD and the Angel Society – gathered to initiate the program with a formal “ribbon-cutting” ceremony, followed by a reception.

Thanks to the philanthropic generosity of the Angel Society of Fallbrook, the organizational efforts of KFCG and the operational expertise of FPUD, Fallbrook residents can now drop off all types of dry cell batteries at a curbside container installed in the FPUD parking lot. (Dry cell batteries include the ones used in flashlights, children’s toys, watches, cameras and other similar batteries.)

On hand for the Fallbrook Public Utility District were Board Vice President Milt Davies and District Manager Keith Lewinger; Keep Fallbrook Clean and Green was represented by Chair Jedda Lorek and board members Judy Mitchell, Anne Burdick, Ali Nusbaum and Barbara Wendt; and the Fallbrook Angel Society was represented by President Linda Promack and Philanthropy Chair Vivian Steere.

Now that the battery recycling station is open, all local residents are encouraged to bring their dry cell batteries to the FPUD parking lot and deposit them in the new, easily visible bright green recycling container. It is illegal to dispose of any hazardous materials, including dry cell batteries, in household trash. If hazardous items are not recycled, they end up in landfills, pollute the environment and pose serious health hazards for all.
