Eight Warrior field hockey players earn all-league

Eight members of Fallbrook High School’s field hockey team earned all-league honors.

“Pretty good,” said Fallbrook coach Kathy Waite. “Had we not beat San Pasqual that second round we might not have had as many.”

That win over San Pasqual was in the CIF Division I quarterfinals. The Warriors lost to La Costa Canyon in the CIF semifinals and concluded the season with a 15-11 overall record, including a 5-3 Avocado League mark which tied for second place in the conference standings.

Fallbrook goalkeeper Lauren Woods was the Avocado League’s Player of the Year as well as a member of the Avocado League first team. “Lauren definitely deserved it,” Waite said of Woods’ Player of the Year honors.

Waite was not surprised to see the Player of the Year award go to a goalkeeper. “When the coaches get together, they try to give credit where credit’s due,” Waite said.

The first-team selections also included Fallbrook defender Rachel Maxwell and Warrior midfielder/forward Devon Holman. “I was very pleased,” Waite said of three players earning all-league honors.

Fallbrook also placed three players on the league’s second team: defender Kathleen Mellano and forwards Hillary Price and Savannah Saunders.

Two Warrior players earned honorable mention distinction: midfielder Whitney Worley and defender Kandace Kooyman.

Holman and Mellano are juniors while Fallbrook’s other six all-league selections are seniors.
