Pets not permitted at Avo Fest

FALLBROOK — The Avocado Festival organizers ask those planning to attend to please leave all pets at home.

There are a number of reasons for prohibiting live animals from the Main Avenue festival area. First, organizers are concerned for the health of the animals themselves as the sun, pavement and large number of people are distressing to animals. Second, safety for the human attendees is a primary concern, based on the need to avoid confrontations between humans of all sizes and animals in an unfamiliar setting. Third, the locations of the food preparation areas does not allow for sufficient space to separate animals from where food is stored and prepared.

There are a number of great places in Fallbrook for pet owners to enjoy. The Santa Margarita River Trail, Los Jilgueros Preserve and Dinwiddie Preserve are three examples of outstanding areas for both pets and their owners to enjoy the open spaces of Fallbrook. The Fallbrook Land Conservancy shows these and other locations on their Web site.

This will be the third year that Avocado Festival organizers have advertised “No Pets, Please.” The festival posters, the chamber’s Web site and extensive advertising in multiple forms and locations provide pet owners with sufficient advance notice to make appropriate accommodations for their pets.

Signs reminding visitors of the “No Pets Policy” will be clearly visible at the entry points to the festival grounds. Animal Control officers will be present to ensure compliance with the county’s code and will cite violators, if necessary.

The prohibition against live animals at public events is found in the California Uniform Retail Food Facility Law, Part 7, Article 13, number 114316.
