Fallbrook even offers avocado on pizzas!

Who would have thought that using avocados on pizza would become such a roaring success in Fallbrook? This spark of creativity has not only generated a demand for this gourmet pizza but garnered an award as well.

In March of 2000, the Shrimp Tequila Lime gourmet pizza offered by Fallbrook restaurant Sourdough Pizza won the National Award Winning Pizza in Las Vegas.

“The previous owners are the ones who came up with it and took it to a pizza expo,” said Ruthie Harris, who co-owns Sourdough with her husband, John. When the Harris family purchased the establishment back in October of 2000, they were thrilled with the award-winning news.

When Ruthie and John took full charge of the culinary duties, the last thing they wanted to do was change the recipe. “When you buy a successful business, you don’t change anything that is successful about it,” stated Ruthie. “You keep what’s good.” And with a national award-winning pizza, the last thing they wanted to do was tamper with perfection.

Diners who try this gourmet pizza for the first time just love it, stated John. “They always come back for more.”

He mentioned that two of his patrons actually found the pizzeria by accident after making a wrong turn in Fallbrook. After stopping in for lunch and nibbling the gourmet pizza, these Temecula residents became loyal diners.

This gourmet dish does not follow traditional pizza preparation. The uniqueness of this pizza is in its two-step process. The first step is applying a blend of secret garlic ranch sauce, tequila, parmesan cheese, jalapeños, parsley, onions, shrimp and mozzarella cheese onto the dough. After serving its time in the oven, the pizza is topped with avocado, tomatoes, cilantro and lime. The result is deliciously different.

“There is a slice of avocado on every piece of pizza,” said Ruthie.

To this day, Ruth still hears kudos about their Shrimp Tequila Lime pizza.

Family member Megan Corcoran claims what she likes most about this award-winning pizza is its lightness. Because the second step of the process is served cold, it’s a great pizza to devour on a hot summer day.

Ruthie mentioned that the Shrimp Tequila Lime pizza is well received by area residents. In fact, she claims that in the last year it has become even more popular. She believes this new burst in profits is from positive word-of-mouth advertising.

“The word is getting out,” said Ruthie in sheer delight.

On the east side of Fallbrook, near Interstate 15, Da Giorgio Italian Restaurant is cooking up a brand new avocado gourmet pizza. “Our Avocado, Bacon and Cheese gourmet pizza will be on our new menu in May,” said Jorge Alcaraz, owner.

Da Giorgio’s is a full service restaurant that will also be offering gourmet pizzas. Alcaraz mentioned that this thin-crust version will be added onto a list of approximately 15 other inventive gourmet pizzas.

Alcaraz has enjoyed experimenting with his new avocado pizza concept, and many diners are looking forward to seeing it on the menu. Being in the kitchen and testing different recipes for his avocado pizza has been a great experience for him.

“I will be the original maker,” he enthused.

Those who visit the restaurant prior to the official menu change may have the chance to sample the Avocado, Bacon and Cheese gourmet pizza even before it is officially offered. If he is around, Alcaraz mentioned, he would be pleased to personally serve up his inspired dish.

With interest growing in this culinary development area, gourmet avocado pizzas are sure to stay on Fallbrook menus and enjoy a popular following. As they say, when in Fallbrook, do as the Fallbrookians – order a gourmet pizza with avocado!
