Field hockey fundraiser successful

The golf tournament which serves as a fundraiser for the Fallbrook High School field hockey program and its off-season club counterpart raised approximately $14,000.

The Play It, Live It, Love It Golf Tournament held March 23 at the Pala Mesa Resort brought 77 golfers and 70 tee sponsors to the event. A total of 136 golfers and non-golfers were present at the awards dinner that evening, and nine major sponsors were complemented by various donors for raffle and auction prizes.

“It went well,” said Kathy Waite, who is the coach of the Fallbrook High School field hockey team and the Guac Girls club team.

The team cannot officially represent Fallbrook High School during the National Field Hockey Festival, the Cal Cup, or any other tournament which takes place outside of the CIF field hockey season. Without the ability to call themselves the Warriors, the team adopted the name Guac Girls.

The National Field Hockey Festival takes place Thanksgiving Weekend and alternates between Florida and California. Although the 2007 National Field Hockey Festival will take place in La Quinta, non-travel expenses include lodging, meals, and the team registration fee.

Waite mailed the registration fee for the National Field Hockey Festival on April 3 and mailed the fee for the Cal Cup, which this year will take place on Memorial Day Weekend at Moorpark Community College in Simi Valley, during the last week of March. “That’s about $3,000 right there,” she said.

In 2006 the Guac Girls participated in a 7-on-7 tournament at the University of Pacific, but this year that tournament conflicts with the Futures skills development session and the Guac Girls will not travel to Stockton.

The varsity and junior varsity field hockey players help with the fundraiser, and this year each of the participating players earned at least $200. “It was very good,” Waite said.

Pedro’s Tacos supported the team as a platinum sponsor. Dr. Brian Harney and the Angel Society of Fallbrook were gold sponsors. Stick-It-Store and Pacific Sons committed as silver sponsors. Robert S. Savage Attorney at Law, Kelly Manufacturing, the Don Hultin Family, and Terry and Louise Small were bronze sponsors.

“I think everything went well. Everybody was nice and festive,” Waite said. “Lovely evening. The facility there at Pala Mesa’s great. The crowd was good to us. They bought plenty of raffle tickets.”

Greg Coppock served as the master of ceremonies at the dinner.

“I was pleased and kids did a good job,” Waite said. “All the golfers were very supportive. The sponsors were supportive. It was a good evening.”
