A lesson in playing 'soft'ball

I have read the many letters that have been written in response to my own concerning the BOMBardments and helicopter noise [“Let’s play ball!” Village News, Opinion, 3/1/07]. Many thanks to Bonnie for having the courage to write what many hundreds of folks in the North County also feel but, due to various reasons, are often unwilling to put to paper.

My first letter was titled “Let’s play ball.” As I did not receive any response that creatively addressed the situation, I thought I might write my own, as one example of how we, as human beings, can explore and respect each other’s worlds.

Dear Jacqueline,

Thank you for your letter to the Fallbrook Village News. As a liaison between Camp Pendleton and the residents of North County, it is my job to address community concerns, especially in Fallbrook, as it lies so close to the base and receives more than its share of noise, as you have duly noted.

We, at Camp Pendleton, are proud of our standing as good neighbors and appreciate the peaceful quality of the rural life many in Fallbrook treasure. However, living next to a military base carries its own unique problems, which means that both the military and the residents of Fallbrook should have the opportunity to explore ways we might make that relationship as healthy and mutually beneficial as possible. We are well aware that for the elderly and children especially, the explosions can be frightening and disturbing.

We are currently looking at some new technologies and would be pleased to send you our latest newsletter, which addresses some of these ideas. We also encourage opportunities to discuss these problems openly in a community forum that we have scheduled for _________.

Sincerely,

_____________

I am quite excited to respond to this letter and will do so next week. If any of you have “creative ideas” and are willing to play softball, please write so that we can begin to explore possibilities. And thanks to the Village News for the opportunity to share.

Jacqueline Develle
