Golf tournament to support mission work in Africa

FALLBROOK — Lay missionaries from Fallbrook Presbyterian Church will soon embark on yet another summer of mission activities on the continent of Africa. Teams will be working in the countries of South Africa, Malawi and Uganda to bring a variety of humanitarian and spiritual support to displaced, impoverished and ailing people.

Several fundraising events are planned throughout the spring in order to finance airfare, lodging and needed materials. The most prominent fundraiser is the annual golf tournament, which will be held at the California Golf Club on May 7.

The tournament will feature team play with a shotgun start, awards for various competitive categories (including a brand new Toyota for getting a hole in one) and a dinner and auction. Interested parties are asked to view the tournament Web site, http://www.fpc.golfreg.com, in order to register to play or participate in sponsorships.

The South Africa mission will be a time to support the ongoing work of the Bowy House (HIV/AIDS care center for children), child and infant daycare centers and farm and community center ministries. There will also be opportunities to serve with the Dream Team (Youth Development Team) in the schools, farms and ghettos of Paarl, a small town just outside of Capetown.

The Malawi mission effort will be a continuation of many of the tasks that have been accomplished there over the last several years. The team will assist the local ministry with famine relief, teaching improved family farming techniques, substance abuse programs, Christian education and the construction of a community center infrastructure in the rural villages.

If the experience of past years holds true, the lay missionaries will return to Fallbrook with a new appreciation for the blessings of America, the privilege and obligation of serving people of other countries and a willingness to improve the spiritual culture of their own homes and community.
