AAUW holds annual educational event

FALLBROOK — The American Association of University Women (AAUW) held their annual Math/Science Breakfast on Tuesday, April 24, at the Fallbrook Woman’s Club. The event, which inspires and encourages seventh and eighth grade girls to direct their energies to studies in math, science and technology, is sponsored jointly by Fallbrook AAUW and Fallbrook Union Elementary School District. Chairperson of the event was Patricia Burgess.

The 18 girls, chosen by their teachers based on their aptitude and interest in those areas, came from five different junior high schools in the area. Each attended with a parent and sat with a professional in the math/science field. Mentors included a diverse group of women from a variety of fields and from employers including the San Diego Wild Animal Park, Dolphin Quest, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Guidant Corporation, Biogen Idec and local independent professionals.

Featured speaker was Lorraine Pillus, PhD, Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of California at San Diego. Pillus says she grew up in a small town in Florida with “wonderful” high school teachers. She graduated from Brown University and received her PhD. from MIT.

Also in attendance were FUESD Superintendent Janice Schultz; principals Lisa Denham of Potter Junior High School, Carol Hilke of San Onofre School and Lori Cummins of Sullivan Middle School; and teacher Kathy Leonard of Iowa Street School.
