Learning about dogs that help people

FALLBROOK — At their April meeting, the CA Retired Teachers Assoc. Fallbrook Division 81 enjoyed a presentation given by Dusty Burgmans, a volunteer for Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). CCI is a non-profit organization that provides highly trained dogs to assist adults and children with disabilities. Dusty is a puppy raiser in charge of three month old Golden Retriever, Joanie, who will receive lots of love and attention plus learn basic obedience in Dusty’s home for the next 18 months. After being socialized in a variety of public setting, Joanie will be ready for her next step – advanced training at CCI regional center located in Oceanside. If she satisfactorily completes this rigorous eight-month training, she will be placed with a disabled person.
