Fallbrook pupils' artwork wins place in water calendar

FALLBROOK — Imagine being handed a box of crayons and a blank sheet of paper and then being tasked with illustrating the idea that water is life. Fourth-graders from schools all over North County did just this. But of the thousands of posters colored, only a select few would make it into the final product: the 2008 “Water Is Life” calendar. Fallbrook pupils scored three of those top spots.

Their colorful images vividly depict the contest’s theme. The annual contest is open only to North County fourth-graders and is put into motion by the Fallbrook Public Utility District and 13 other North County water agencies to find the most eye-catching images illustrating the need for saving water.

About 100 Fallbrook fourth-graders participated.

The 12 finalists from Fallbrook include, in no particular order: Madison Hawksley of St. Peter’s Catholic School; Catalina Lopez, Danielle DeVera and twins Richelle and Rickey Stephens of La Paloma Elementary; Rebecca Dore of Live Oak School; and Addison Kempf, Lance Walker, Scott Stevenson, Catie Ellis, Kelly Thomas and Alexandra Ray of Zion Lutheran School.
