Sorensen Ranch forced to close doors

This Sunday, May 6, Sorensen Ranch and Produce in Rainbow will be closing its doors (gates) due to the Rainbow Planning Group’s non-support of our request of a zoning change in this Area (5) in Rainbow/San Diego County.

Area 5 in Rainbow is zoned residential and has been for many years. The Rainbow Planning Group has approved “grandfathering” the gun club, construction storage lot and the Dairy Truck Relay Facility in this area because they have been in this residentially zoned area for a number of years. Sorensen Ranch, on the other hand, is new (one year this month). The Planning Group has stated that the Community of Rainbow does not want any more commercial operations in Rainbow.

Our request to the Rainbow Planning Group has been to support a zoning change to rural commercial so we can go from an “illegal” operation in Rainbow to a “legal” operation and bring everyone in Area 5 into compliance with San Diego County code.

When we opened Sorensen Ranch and Produce last May, we knew that this area was zoned residential but were confident we would get the Planning Group’s support for a change in zoning due to the value and service that we were bringing to the community. The only thing that we have been successful in getting the Planning Group to do so far on this issue is calling the San Diego County Code Enforcement on us for code violations in a residentially zoned area.

We wish to thank all of you who brought your families to the ranch and the local schools who enjoyed bringing their classes for field trips to Sorensen Ranch and Produce. At the same time, we wish to apologize to all of you that we are forced to close our doors (gates) at this time.

If you have time this weekend (May 4-6), please bring your children by so that they can say goodbye to their friends in our Petting Farm.
