Several 'firsts' for Fallbrook wrestling

Fallbrook wrestling is celebrating many “firsts,” beginning with Head Coach Roye Oliver’s 2007 National Veterans Freestyle Championship title win. Oliver will be going as a member of the USA Wrestling Team to compete in the World Veterans Championships in Istanbul this August. The team is very proud of his accomplishments and is honored to have such a talented and still-active wrestler leading them!

To make this trip possible, Coach Oliver is seeking financial sponsors to support his traveling expenses. His registration is due by June 3, so anyone who would like to help him bring home the gold for the USA or wants more information may contact him directly at [email protected] or (760) 214-5516.

This year the Wrestling Boosters began a new plan to build a truly world-class program in Fallbrook. They also implemented a new fundraising program that far exceeded its optimistic goals thanks to the community’s support and the hard work of the wrestlers and boosters. This, along with four new coaches and the reactivation of the local youth wrestling program, including a new coach, Mike Dilley, has resulted in there being more wrestlers on the team than ever before, including more freshmen this year than any three previous years combined.

Another “first” was the booth at the Avocado Festival. This was a joint effort between the FUHS wrestling team and the Relentless Freestyle Club, their local youth program. Five parents, two coaches, a few high school wrestlers and more than 15 Relentless wrestlers showed up to help work the booth, where a new team banner and apparel were unveiled. This was an important and successful step in the drive to build community awareness and support. They give a special thanks to Alan Burke and Jacob Wagaman for spending their Saturday morning gathering more than 300 pounds of avocados to sell and to Lenny Ozars for donating the avocados. Burke even returned the next morning and helped in the booth most of the day!

Finally, the team wishes to thank those who have supported them this season, especially the Adopt-a-Wrestler sponsors and everyone else who has so generously given to them, especially the upper level team sponsors.

It’s never too late to donate! Those who would like more information on sponsorship and/or other ways to support the team should contact Bonnie Wagaman at (760) 473-5203. For general FUHS wrestling information, contact Roye Oliver at (760) 214-5516 or Greg Wagaman at (760) 828-5306.
