Local rugby team wins championship

The weekend of April 28-29, the Fallbrook Youth Rugby teams played for the Southern California League Championship at Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary High School in Montebello, CA. Both the U14 and U16 teams qualified by finishing in the top two places at the So. Cal. South Conference.

The U16 semifinal match was against the San Louis Obispo Barbarians. The game started well for the Warriors (Fallbrook High School) as Cormac Kenan scored the opening 5 points. However, the Barbarians responded with 10 points and that’s how the half ended. In the second half Fallbrook narrowed the gap to 10 to 8 on a penalty kick by Antonio Padilla. As play went back and forth the Warriors fell to the eventual champions by a score of 15-24.

In the U14 semifinal the Fallbrook Braves (Potter Junior High) took on the Eagles of Hawaiian Gardens. From the kickoff the Braves were in total control and shutout the Eagles 26-0. Tries were scored by Martin Barajas, Kyle Volan, Mohammed Cardenas and Ryan Kenan.

In the championship final the Braves took on the Fullerton Lions. In a hard-fought match the Braves came out on top 24-5 and were crowned So. Cal. U14 Champions. Points were scored by Gabe Edwards, Martin Barajas, Kyle Volan and Mohammed Cardenas. The Braves ended the season with a perfect 9-0 record.
