Soccer duo wins state championship

LANCASTER — Under extremely windy conditions, Sheila Orozco and Lauren Hughey carried their Southwest Soccer Club (SWSC) team to a state championship. On Sunday morning in a semifinal match, SWSC demolished the Celtic Harps 6-1 to advance to the state championship against PQ Premier.

In the championship, SWSC scored in the first half as Orozco provided a stop in the defensive end and sent a pass forward to Hughey, who then sliced the defense with a pass to leave her striker one-on-one with the PQ goalie for an easy score. PQ Premier evened the score at one and the game was knotted at the end of the half. The second half was a struggle between both teams and the blustery conditions until Hughey provided the game-winner on a blast off the PQ goalie’s hands with 10 minutes left.

The road to the championship for SWSC required focus, passion and a game plan when it counted. Orozco and Hughey credit their coach, Richard Boon, with providing the team with a clear understanding of the difference in wanting to win and the will to win.
