Meet the real space cowboys July 21

SAN DIEGO — Astronauts Scott Carpenter, Eugene Cernan and Thomas Stafford will appear July 21 at the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park.

The public is invited to attend free of charge and the day begins at 10:30 a.m. with a Young People’s Forum appropriate for children in grades three and up. The forum is aimed at inspiring San Diego’s next greatest generation! A modified Q&A period will follow.

The main forum begins at 2 p.m. Ed Buckbee, director emeritus of the US Space & Rocket Center and founder of US Space Camp, will moderate both forums. Buckbee served as a NASA public affairs officer during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs.

Following the 2 p.m. program, Cernan, Buckbee and Carpenter will sign their books available for purchase that day.

Carpenter, Cernan and Stafford are teaming together to offer a unique perspective on space exploration, yesterday, today and tomorrow. There is renewed public interest in the manned space program since NASA announced its goal to build a new outpost on the moon. Returning to the moon is a critical first step in preparation for trips to Mars and beyond.

The three astronauts represent NASA’s three premier manned space flight programs of the 20th century: the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. Carpenter is one of the original seven Mercury astronauts, flying the United States’ second manned orbital mission. Stafford flew in space four times on Gemini and Apollo spacecraft, including as mission commander on the historic Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the first meeting of American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts in space. One of the 12 men to have walked on the moon, Cernan was the last in December 1972.
