Savin sisters recite Pledge of Allegiance at supervisors meeting

Fallbrook sisters Hannah and Abbey Savin recited the Pledge of Allegiance to open the May 22 meeting of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

“We were very proud to do it for Fallbrook,” said their mother, Stacey. “We were happy to do it.”

The supervisors adopted an Operational Area Evacuation Plan and an Operational Area Recovery Plan during the May 22 meeting and also heard a presentation on the county’s commitment to emergency preparedness and emergency management. The county’s Office of Emergency Services has encouraged each household in the county to complete a family disaster plan, and the Office of Emergency Services worked with the Vista Unified School District and the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District on a pilot project in which each student at the schools in the two districts was given a family disaster plan and an emergency checklist.

Students who returned the checklist were given a t-shirt, and various local businesses donated prizes for the elementary school and middle school with the highest percentage of returned checklists. “It was a really fun program,” Stacey said. “It’s a little hard to get them excited about setting plans, but they did a good job with the program.”

Hannah is in first grade and Abbey is a kindergartner, both at Fallbrook Street School. Fallbrook Street School led all schools in the two districts with a checklist return rate of 77.4 percent, and as part of the reward for having the highest return percentage, Leslie Luke, the group program manager for the Office of Emergency Services, contacted Fallbrook Street School principal Diane McClellan and requested students from the school to lead the Pledge of Allegiance the day of the presentation.

Stacey is involved with the school’s site council and the school’s parent-teacher association. McClellan asked about the willingness of her daughters. “They were very excited. They were very proud to represent the school,” Stacey said.

The sisters prepared for their appearance before the Board of Supervisors, which was also televised on County Television Network. “There was a lot of practice going on in the house to make sure they got it right,” Stacey said.

Hannah and Abbey are third-generation Fallbrook residents.
