Hasvold qualifies for state meet

Fallbrook High School junior Bret Hasvold qualified for the state track and field meet by finishing third among 1,600-meter runners from all school enrollment divisions at the CIF San Diego Section finals May 26 at Mount Carmel High School.

Hasvold had a time of 4:15.84 in the metric mile, which placed him second among Division I runners as well as third in the section. The top three runners and field athletes from the combined divisions in each event qualify for the state meet.

“Did an excellent job,” said Fallbrook head coach Marty Hauck. “It was a tremendous race.”

Although Hasvold did not achieve a personal record at the CIF finals, his 4:13.92 at the Avocado League finals earlier in the month had beaten his previous personal record by more than five seconds. “When you get to that level it’s hard to match that,” Hauck said.

The top nine runners in their preliminary heats will advance to the state finals. Hasvold will be seeded 13th at the state meet.

The top six Division I finishers in each event earned medals. Fallbrook High School sophomore Marquis Sumpter also earned a medal at the CIF finals by finishing fifth in the 200-meter dash. Sumpter had a personal record of 22.23 seconds in the CIF finals.

Fallbrook’s Aaron Holt had a time of 22.56 seconds in the 200-meter dash, which placed seventh and came within 0.04 seconds of a medal. The Fallbrook 4x400 relay team of Hasvold, Sumpter, Taylor Enman, and Forrest Whitfield also placed seventh at the CIF finals. Vinny Granata placed eighth in the 3,200-meter run.

The Warriors finished third in the Avocado League standings after a 2-3 record in dual meets and the league finals.

“Tremendous season. We had a great time,” Hauck said.
