Champions join forces to create premier racing venue

PERRIS — What better management for California’s oldest continuously operating motocross track than two champion riders who know what it takes to provide the ultimate riding experience? Sebastien Tortelli and Rick Johnson have joined together to create an ownership “dream team.” As co-owners of the Perris Raceway since May of this year, they are launching an ambitious program of expansion and improvements to the huge facility. Plans include a third track and additional seating for spectators.

“This has been one of the main tracks in California for years,” said Tortelli. “Our goal is to take it to an even higher level. We want to provide something for everyone here at the Perris Raceway. If a rider is not comfortable, they are not having as much fun as they should be. Our track makes sure that beginners, intermediate and experienced riders have a safe and fun place to ride.”

According to track General Manager Jeff Nordstrom, having two former champions running the show draws riders from all over the region.

“We have people coming from as far away as Arizona, and all the time from San Diego and LA,” said Nordstrom. He also confirmed the ownership’s commitment to safe riding: “No one gets out on the track without all the correct equipment.”

Besides the famous owners, the track has other amenities as well. “We have overnight camping, full lighting and security and a snack bar. We have flaggers and EMTs present whenever there are bikes on the track. The track is very family-friendly,” said Tortelli.

The Perris Raceway currently hosts the Amateur Nationals and on racing weekends draws crowds in the thousands. Plans for the immediate future include a 50th anniversary race (the track opened in 1957) and an invitational Supercross event with a $10,000 purse.

Tortelli and Johnson also have plans for a Champ Factory Racing Camp to be launched soon at the Raceway. Both former champions want to give back to the sport by running the racing school. “The school will be for all levels, from kids who have never been on a bike to professionals,” said Tortelli. The program will feature all aspects of motocross training, including conditioning and off-bike training. The regimen will be based on that which was followed by Tortelli and Johnson during their championship careers.
