Hasvold 16th at state meet

Although Fallbrook High School junior Bret Hasvold didn’t qualify for the finals of the state track and field meet June 1-2 in Sacramento, his time of 4:19.32 in the boys 1,600-meter run was the 16th fastest among the 31 runners in that event at the state meet.

Hasvold placed eighth among the 15 runners in his heat June 1. The top nine times from both heats advanced to the finals the following day.

“It kind of opened his eyes to what the next level’s all about,” said Fallbrook head track and field coach Marty Hauck. “It was a chance for him as a junior to get up there.”

Hasvold finished third among 1,600-meter runners from all school enrollment divisions at the CIF San Diego Section finals May 26. The top three San Diego Section runners and field athletes from the combined divisions in each event qualify for the state meet.

Hasvold had a time of 4:15.84 in the metric mile at the CIF finals and a personal record of 4:13.92 at the Avocado League finals earlier in May. “He just had a tremendous season,” Hauck said. “He’s our fastest junior miler ever.”

Although he also reached the state meet in cross-country during the academic year, the trip to the CIF state meet was the first in track and field for Hasvold. “Tremendous experience for him for next year,” Hauck said.

Many of the runners who finished ahead of Hasvold were seniors and also had previous experience at a state track and field meet. “He’s got an excellent shot next year,” Hauck said.
