Celebrating our independence shouldn't carry a price tag

How sad that we have lost so much in our America that was taken for granted for generations. We no longer go to bed with our windows open and our doors unlocked, go to school without a threat of guns or travel without looking over our shoulder, just to name a very few of the changes in our lives.

At this time of year I am reminded of our loss of ability to celebrate the birth of our nation, as a community, in the really “grand tradition” by packing up fried chicken picnics and spreading blankets on the town square lawn, or the shore, and waiting with our neighbors for the fireworks. No $25 tickets or $1,000 tables, $5 parking fee or food and beverage tickets necessary to share our joy and pride of country.

How sad that the community celebration of our nation’s freedom now has a price tag almost everywhere.

Sad, but not surprising, considering we are now a nation governed by Lobbyist and Corporate America price tags.

Happy Independence Day, America – your grassroots are still proud of you and the foundation that you were built upon. We will celebrate you with fried chicken in our backyards and fireworks on our television screen, and our pride in you will be no less sincere for doing so.
