Golfers finish 13-6 in dual meets

Fallbrook High School’s boys golf team finished the 2007 season with a 13-6 overall record in dual meets.

The Warriors also had a 6-4 Avocado League record, which tied for third in the conference standings.

“We were disappointed that we didn’t win the league, but I thought there were times the kids played really well,” said Fallbrook coach Steve Jorde.

The schedule gave the Warriors two matches against Rancho Buena Vista to begin the league season. The Longhorns won both of those matches and eventually won the league with a 9-1 record against Avocado League opposition. “They were a very good team,” Jorde said of the Longhorns.

El Camino finished 7-3 in league play to take second in the standings, while Carlsbad tied Fallbrook with a 6-4 mark.

The Warriors finished fourth in the North County Conference Tournament following the league dual meets, but Fallbrook’s Colin Featherstone won the individual championship by shooting 147 over 36 holes.

Featherstone shot an 80 on the first day of the tournament at Camp Pendleton before shooting a 67 during the second round at the Southern California Golf Association course in Murrieta. “That was a heck of a turnaround,” Jorde said.

Featherstone’s second round at the SCGA course included shooting six under par during the final five holes to win the individual championship by one stroke. He had a birdie on his 14th hole (which due to a shotgun start was the course’s par-4 15th hole), a par on his 15th hole (the course’s par-3 16th), an eagle on his 16th hole (the course’s par-5 17th), a birdie on his 17th hole (the course’s par-4 18th), and a birdie on his final hole (the course’s par-5 first hole).

During the season Featherstone averaged 37.2 strokes per nine holes. “Colin’s the only senior, so we’ve got five kids back and the JV team was undefeated, so we’re looking for good things in the future,” Jorde said.

Featherstone was the only senior who played varsity matches during the season, although seniors Joe Lambert and Chris Strong were also on the team. Juniors Stan Bednarski and Tyler Straeter were starters while junior Anthony Rosetta saw limited playing time. Three sophomores started for the Warriors: Matt Ware, Jake Ware, and Andy Wood.

Bednarski finished sixth in the North County Conference tournament with a 152; he shot 75 during the first round and 77 for the second 18 holes.

Although Fallbrook’s team score of 412 did not make the cut after the first day of the CIF tournament, Bednarski shot a 77 to advance to the second day of individual play. Bednarski, who averaged 39.1 strokes per nine holes during the season, shot an 80 during the second round and did not advance to the sectionals.
