Edwards awarded Essay Scholarship

Lauren Edwards, a graduating senior at Fallbrook High School, was recently awarded the Essay Scholarship from the Fallbrook Democratic Club and San Diego Veterans for Peace. High school seniors from around the county were asked to write an essay on the theme of peace and Edwards’ was selected for the award. For more information visit http://www.sdvfp.org or http://www.fallbrookdemocraticclub.com.

Edwards’ essay concludes: “Patriotism is not the cause of war, its corruption is. John F. Kennedy was correct in stating, ‘Without debate, without criticism, no administration and no country can succeed – and no republic can survive.’ One who is truly devoted to the cause of peace is willing and informed enough to understand other people’s ideologies, reason from a position of knowledge instead of fear and speak out against unnecessary acts of violence. That is the definition of a true patriot.”
