Taxpayers on Almond Street being ignored

In January, I began contacting the county for help to stop the speeders using Almond Street. I was told we would receive two tubular counting/speed monitors to check the situation. We did not. I was told our street could be double yellow-striped. It was not.

There are 25 mph signs at each end of the street, placed too close to the corners for drivers to observe them as they make their speedy turns onto Almond. I was told Almond meets the county’s width requirements, even if cars are parked on each side of the street. I was told we cannot have speed bumps because fire and rescue vehicles have to use our street to reach the highly developed area of homes above us.

We do not have sidewalks, but we do have six to eight elementary school children who have to walk up and down the hill twice a day to their bus stops. We also have junior high and high school students who tend to walk more in the middle of the road. And we have mothers with children and strollers as well as adults walking their dogs. We cannot get sidewalks. They are too expensive. More expensive than the cost of lives?

These houses on Almond have been paying county taxes since 1952, with no help or improvement for our street. This is just wrong. On the map, Almond appears to be a short, insignificant road; in reality it has become a major feeder street to Mission from the huge influx of homes developed above it. Many of our vehicles have been subjected to hit-and-run speeders and over the years we have suffered fatalities and injuries.

I wonder if the folks in Poets Square are aware that their children ride skateboards down our street, often after dark. Did I check with the Fallbrook Planning Commission? Yes, I did. Jim Russell is the one who referred me to San Diego County Streets and Roads.
