Barn sale, pancake breakfast planned

The plan that the members of the Fallbrook Historical Society have come up with for an annual Old Fashioned Barn Sale is a great one and offers multiple benefits. It combines the best of both worlds – being able to browse through a barn full of great bargains (items previously owned by another member of the community) and cleaning out and donating good items you don’t need around your house any more.

Here’s the deal: the Historical Society encourages all residents to go through their homes, garages, storage sheds and attics and donate good useable items to the sale. They will give you a tax-deductible receipt for them! This includes good household items, appliances, antiques, office equipment, tools, jewelry, patio furniture, hobby items, kitchenware, bikes, toys, plants, flowers and more. (No clothing, please.) Got something too large to haul in to them? They’ll send some strong arms and a pickup to help you out! Are you a business wishing to donate some of your inventory left over from last year? This is the time! The beauty of doing this is that you are helping preserve the history of your community by simply donating items you no longer need.

Then, after you’ve cleaned out all the stuff you don’t want or need, go to the sale! Remember, you’ve made room for new stuff now! Enjoy snooping through all the stuff available at the Barn Sale. You are bound to find one (or more) things you can’t possibly live without – again benefiting the preservation of your town’s history. How much greater can it be?

“We are trying to raise money to finish the barn and provide for its annual maintenance,” said Jack Story, president of the Historical Society. “We need about $100,000 to finish the inside of it.”

And it was that responsibility that prompted the members to develop the idea of a Barn Sale.

“Because we have this responsibility [of the barn] and nothing but donations to survive on, we tried to think of a way the barn could help itself,” Story said. “Darwin East came up with the idea and Bev [McDougal] said she would chair it. Now, we want this to be an annual event!”

To help families begin their shopping early that day, a pancake breakfast will be offered from 7 to 10 a.m. by North County Fire Explorers. For $5, enjoy a breakfast of sausage, pancakes and juice or coffee.

Residents are encouraged to put the event on their calendars now! Donate your items on any Wednesday or Thursday in July (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) before the sale on July 28. Need help with a large item? Call (760) 728-2546 or (760) 723-4125. The sale starts at 8 a.m. at the Barn, located on the Historical Society museum property at 260 Rockycrest Road, Fallbrook.

Editor’s Note: Historical items donated to the Society are never offered for sale. The Barn Sale will strictly contain items donated just for the purpose of the sale.
