Our national debt

Well-meaning Republicans are going to have to answer to their children and grandchildren for approximately $30,000 debt that we are dumping on them. This includes the Jerry Fallwell branch of the ‘Religious Right’ who has voted in our ‘leaders’ who have created most of this, and, by the way, scoffed at our environmental issues.

In the last 26 years, our national debt has grown from a trillion to eight trillion, yet Bush has thrown gasoline on the fire by taking millions of taxes off his richest supporters, including our incumbent congressman from the 49th district, and shoved the resulting debt to our children.

Let’s mention two celebrities. Our greatly respected businessman Warren Buffet opposes Bush’s effort to kill the estate tax as he is wise enough to know that vast inherited wealth is an almost sure way to ruin the next generation. Paris Hilton has become a poster child for that sad truth.

For ten years in the 1960s, I worked hard in the Democratic state of Texas to build a responsible Republican party. For the last 37 years, I remained a Republican with an increasingly vain try to limit its excesses. Many of us are now Independent or conservative Democrats to try to bring back common sense.
