Featherstone named Avo League Player of the Year

Fallbrook High School senior Colin Featherstone was named the Avocado League’s Player of the Year for boys golf.

The Player of the Year honors also secured a berth for Featherstone on the league’s first team, and Warrior junior Stan Bednarski was selected to the league’s second team.

Featherstone won the North County Conference tournament and also had an average of 37.5 strokes per nine holes in league matches. “He deserved to be the Player of the Year. Played really well,” said Fallbrook coach Steve Jorde. “That was two years in a row as Player of the Year, and he just had another terrific league season for us.”

Featherstone earned the Avocado League Player of the Year honors in 2006 but finished second in the league championship tournament by one stroke. This year he won the tournament by one stroke after shooting six under par during the final five holes.

Featherstone was selected to the Avocado League’s first team for all four years of his high school career. The 18-year-old Featherstone has been golfing since he was 12. He plans to play golf at San Diego State University during the 2007-08 collegiate season.

Featherstone was born in Pomerado Hospital but is a lifelong Fallbrook resident. He played Fallbrook Youth Baseball, although since high school baseball and high school golf are both spring sports he gave up competitive baseball to play golf. Featherstone also competed on the shortboard for the high school’s surf team.

Featherstone will enter SDSU as an undeclared major. He was homeschooled through elementary school and attended Potter Junior High School before enrolling at Fallbrook High School.

Featherstone’s nine-hole average for the overall season was 37.2 strokes.

Bednarski averaged 40.3 strokes per nine holes in league matches and 39.7 strokes per nine holes overall. “He was our strong number two all year, played really well,” Jorde said. “He played really well in the league tournament.”

Bednarski finished sixth in the league tournament. He also shot a 77 on the first day of the CIF tournament to advance to the second round.
