Guac Girls 3-1-1 in Cal Cup

The Guac Girls comprised of Fallbrook High School field hockey players finished with a 3-1-1 record at the Cal Cup May 26-28 at Moorpark Community College.

“We did fine,” said Guac Girls coach Kathy Waite. “I was just very pleased.”

High school field hockey teams cannot officially represent their schools outside of the CIF season, and without the ability to call themselves the Warriors the team adopted the name Guac Girls. The Cal Cup is often a chance for Waite, who is also the high school varsity field hockey coach, to assess her team for the upcoming fall season.

“I was very pleased with our 2007 team. They’re doing a good job as a new group,” Waite said.

The Cal Cup starters consisted of Emily Badillo, Lydia Brambila, Jordan Bretsch, Lizzy Eskue, Patti Gonzales, Liz Green, Devon Holman, Mandie Kelly, Kathleen Mellano, Christine Plotts, and goalie Roslyn Reynoso. “I enjoyed seeing how well they would rise to the occasion competitively. That was good,” Waite said. “They will come together well.”

The Guac Girls began the tournament May 26 with a 2-1 loss to a Gilroy team called Infinity. The Guac Girls had actually tied the score at two goals apiece, but the second goal was called back. “I thought it was our best skills game,” Waite said.

The other May 26 game was a 9-0 victory over a Colorado squad. The first May 27 game was against Short Corner, the off-season name of the Serra High School team. “That was a good game, too,” Waite said.

The Fallbrook girls played Short Corner to a 2-2 tie. Their second May 27 game was a 5-0 win against Snafu, which consists of players from Marina High School in Huntington Beach.

Waite is a graduate of Marina High School and played field hockey there. The match was the first ever for Waite as a coach against a Marina High School team. “That was weird to play my alma mater,” she said.

The tournament included a crossover game against a team from a different pool, and on May 28 the Guac Girls played a San Jose team called the Panthers and won 1-0. “It was a tight game,” Waite said.

Because Infinity and Short Corner did not play each other and the crossover game did not count in pool standings, the Guac Girls finished third in their pool despite the 3-1-1 record.
