Six Warrior baseballers earn all-league

Six members of Fallbrook High School’s baseball team earned all-league honors for 2007.

Shawn Sanford and Clark Murphy were named to the Avocado League’s first team while honorable mention accolades were given to Kevin Vandivort, Jeff Newman, Josh Peters, and Andrew Siva.

“It’s always good when you can have that many,” said Fallbrook assistant coach Gary Carter.

Sanford, a senior, pitched and also played the outfield. “He’s a quiet leader, doesn’t have much to say,” Carter said. “He was always the kid in the background because we always had some talent in front of him.”

Sanford took advantage of his opportunity to play regularly. “Sean plays just as good center field as Mike Leake does. He’s an athlete,” Carter said.

Leake opted to play baseball at Arizona State University rather than sign with the Oakland Athletics after being drafted in 2006. Leake was a top pitcher for the Warriors as well as last year’s starting center fielder.

Sanford was also Fallbrook’s leadoff hitter. “He went out and had, I think, a really good year,” Carter said.

Murphy played first base and right field for the Warriors during his junior season. “He has a lot of potential,” Carter said. “He’s growing into his body. I have really high expectations for Clark next year.”

Clark will likely be primarily an outfielder in 2008. “I know he’s going to be a good leader his senior year,” Carter said.

“Baseball is a game that really means a lot to Clark,” Carter said. “It’s a desire for him to succeed.”

Clark, a left-handed hitter, has power-hitting ability which could help attain that success. “He’s got the talent to do it,” Carter said.

Vandivort, a junior, was the club’s shortstop in 2007 and also took the mound when needed. “He had a solid season at shortstop,” Carter said. “He got better as the year progressed.”

Newman, a senior, spent 2007 as the team’s designated hitter. “He had a really good bat,” Carter said. “He’s a very intelligent young man who just played baseball because he loved the sport.”

Peters moved into the team’s pitching rotation for his senior season. His accomplishments included a no-hitter March 15 against Escondido in the Hilltop-Lolita’s Tournament. “Strong lefty. Real competitive young man,” Carter said. “He had some really good games for us.”

Siva played first base and outfield during his senior year, although he was injured during the season and missed part of 2007. “A lot of talent,” Carter said. “Hits the ball hard.”

Siva, a left-handed hitter, was also a third-generation Fallbrook High School baseball player.
