Robin Adler Quintet to present 'Songs of Joni Mitchell'

FALLBROOK — Jazz vocalist Robin Adler, Fallbrook resident since 1967, continues her sold out concert series performing an ambitious selection of material by Joni Mitchell, the iconic Canadian singer-songwriter, guitarist and painter, with a presentation of “The Songs of Joni Mitchell” on July 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hilltop Center.

Mitchell’s work emerged as part of the Greenwich Village folk music scene in the late 1960s. After a move to Los Angeles, it evolved to a unique rock style distinguished by her intelligent lyrics and brilliant voice. By the late ’70s Mitchell had become a bona fide jazz vocalist, collaborating with jazz legend Charles Mingus, earning her the respect of jazz titans Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorter. After a couple of attempts to retire during the ’90s, Joni just released a new album.

In early 2006 Adler and her husband, multi-instrumentalist, music producer and guitar/drum teacher Dave Blackburn, embarked on the ambitious project of learning Mitchell’s music in all its complexities through all its epochs. They assembled the “Joni Band,” comprised of Adler on lead vocals, Blackburn on guitar, touring veteran of Tom Scott, Lee Ritenour and George Benson’s bands Barnaby Finch on keyboard and top San Diego drummer Duncan Moore and bass wunderkind Evan Stumpges, with background singers Peggy Watson and Brittney Doehring.
