Motocross continues at Perris

PERRIS — Early high temperatures gave way to a pleasantly cool evening at Perris Raceway as the Hot Summer Nights racing series continued June 30. Hundreds of spectators arrived in RVs and trucks to see the motocross action unfold on California’s oldest track. The racing action never cooled as young riders in the Pee Wee division squared off on the small track while experienced riders competed on the big tracks.

Four-stroke (ages 4-6)

Rene Garcia of Riverside County hung on for the win over Fallbrook’s Caleb Battle and Costa Mesa’s Marcus Nesby, who finished second and third, respectively. Lively competition was the order of the day as Garcia rode well enough to solidify his standing in the competition, winning the first and second moto’s.

Two-stroke Starter (ages 4-6)

Cannon Murphy of Costa Mesa edged Dean Herr for the victory in this class. Murphy, who previously had placed first in the four-stroke 50cc starter class, appears to be adjusting well to the new two-stroke KTM machine he is using. Ben Delehanty rode hard and finished in third place, behind Murphy and Herr.

PW/SR50 class

Manuel Moreno did an outstanding job and took first place in this category. Also delivering strong performances and worthy of mention were Dean Herr (second place) and Owen Harnishfagor (third place).

The fourth round of Hot Summer Nights racing is July 21. The track opens at noon; registration for riders begins at 1 p.m .; practices start at 3:30 and racing begins at 4:30.
